In Japan there’s no big difference between drawing and writing, traditionally both is done with the brush. And there’s the belief that a wish has to be written to come true. The Japanese comic artist AMAKOMA-YA has drawn this Namazu-e on March 15, 2011:
„A long time ago, in Japan, when the huge catfish which lives underground moved, it was believed that an earthquake occurred.
As God places a rock on a catfish and cannot move, there is a tradition of having made it write that a written oath did not cause an earthquake.
catfish [Namazu], GOD [鹿島大明神/Kashimadaimyojin], and rock [kaname-ishi] — the picture to which three elements were equal is called Namazue [鯰絵].
It is a picture of the wish which wants an earthquake not to occur. (examples)
However, not God but the child is drawn with this picture.“
Seems like AMAKOMA-YA has to draw many more wishes like this because Namazu doesn’t stop to write, the latest prediction says that there’ll be another big earthquake in the next 4 years. That prediction was not given by scare mongers, but very serious and careful scientists.
